A DNA breakthrough has helped detectives track down a man wanted over a shocking cold case that has gone unsolved for more than 30 years, WA Police say. Samples taken at the time of the sex assault at a Perth college in 1993 were recently compared to others on a DNA database, and family trees dating back to 1810 were also referenced, before a 53-year-old Canberra man was extradited to WA and charged.

Detectives on Friday described how “groundbreaking” investigative genetic genealogy techniques and the work of the PathWest Forensic Biology Department had helped them narrow down a suspect. The DNA profile gathered at the time was compared to others on a genetic database to find strong matches and help to form a family tree.
