Some 120 officers, including Chief Constable Jon Boutcher took part in a virtual reality experience ahead of Autism Acceptance Week.

The chief constable said those with autism have been “failed” in the past due to a lack of understanding of such conditions. “You can’t do that unless you walk in other people’s shoes from different backgrounds, cultures and disabilities,” he told the PA news agency. “I have done some stuff with autism and Asperger’s previously because we failed people with these conditions because we have not understood these conditions so that is why this is so important to do.”
“With it being Autism Acceptance Week, I hope that people can see the efforts we’re making to better equip our officers to be more accessible and responsive to the autistic community.“As the Chief Constable has said, we’re here for a really wide diverse range of people, and that’s not easy for frontline practitioners so everybody who have come has been really grateful for the training and has engaged really positively in it.
