Simon Blackwell, senior investigating officer at Cheshire Police, said Operation Hummingbird – the unit which brought Letby to justice – will now consider areas including “senior leadership and decision making to determine whether any criminality has taken place”. The court heard children were harmed in a variety of ways including having excess milk and air injected into their bodies and being poisoned with insulin.She also faces a retrial next year on a further count of attempted murder.

“The investigation will focus on the indictment period of the charges for Lucy Letby, from June 2015 to June 2016, and consider areas including senior leadership and decision making to determine whether any criminality has taken place. At this stage we are not investigating any individuals in relation to gross negligence manslaughter.
