Counter-terrorism expert believes rules around 'volunteer' armed officers might be reviewed
Counter-terrorism expert believes rules around 'volunteer' armed officers might be reviewedFirearms officers reportedly furious over the treatment of a colleague who kicked a man in the head at Manchester Airport ‘must be supported’, a counter-terror expert has warned.
In its initial statement, Greater Manchester Police said all those attending were firearms officers and “there was a clear risk during this assault of their firearms being taken from them.” More than 100 firearms officers at the Met refused to carry out their duties last September in the wake of the decision to charge an officer with murder over the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Chris Kaba in London.: “Airports all over the world now have routinely armed officers patrolling. Their main purpose is to stop terrorists committing a mass casualty event.
Mr Acheson said he believes policing bosses responsible for retaining volunteer firearms officers will be examining the Manchester Airport incident “with particular interest”. “We would also like to thank the many members of the public who have contacted us offering support for our hard-working colleagues doing a difficult and dangerous job. It is appreciated.”
The police watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct has met with the family of the man kicked in the head, named by his family’s lawyer as 19-year-old Fahir Amaaz.
