Former intelligence officer Chris Clark's new book details cases where he says evidence points to Peter Sutcliffe being responsible for up to 45 murders.

As reported by the Mirror, this would make him Britain’s second most prolific serial killer of modern times. Former intelligence officer Chris Clark says new evidence shows that - before killing Wilma McCann, 28, and Emily Jackson, 42 - Peter Sutcliffe was responsible for other murders, as depicted in hit ITV drama series The Long Shadow.

However, Chris claims the Ripper’s murder spree began in 1964. He said: “This is the year he committed his first murder.” Chris says they have uncovered nine more unsolved murders to add to the 36 deaths he already believed Sutcliffe was responsible for, in his new book with co-author Tom Hicks. This would mean only Harold Shipman was a more prolific modern British serial killer.

“His shop was opposite a cafe that Sutcliffe frequented as a lorry driver. So we can place Sutcliffe in the area when she was alive. In 2012, the body was exhumed and her profile is on the national database in the hope that a familial match might be found in the future. From our investigations, I’m convinced this poor woman is another Sutcliffe victim.”

Chris says: “Use of a ligature and a knife, blows to the head/face, frenzied stripping of clothing, dragging the body off a footpath to a secluded secondary crime scene and the scattering of her clothing, occurred in several murders Sutcliffe is known to have committed. It’s quite clear from the weapons he used that it was Peter Sutcliffe.”

Sutcliffe’s sister-in-law Marianne lived in west London at the time of 20-year-old Ann’s murder and he and wife Sonia regularly visited. Chris says: “Sutcliffe was therefore able to travel around London at night and could have committed attacks.” Wendy had been stabbed, but not mutilated and was fully clothed. She had been attacked in an alley and dragged to the spot where she was discovered. West Yorkshire dismissed the link as there were no post-death mutilations but Chris believes the hasty cover-up suggests that the killer was disturbed before he could go any further. He says: “A shovel of sand was thrown over her in a quick bid to hide the body.
