Three police officers are facing misconduct hearings following the death of Kiena Dawes, a 23-year-old hairdresser who took her own life after enduring two-and-a-half years of abuse from her partner, Ryan Wellings. Ms. Dawes left a note on her mobile phone stating, 'I hope my life saves another by police services acting faster,' before her death on July 22, 2022, in Barnacre, near Preston. Wellings was convicted of assault and coercive and controlling behavior but cleared of manslaughter.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating three officers for potential misconduct in connection with Ms. Dawes' previous interactions with police. The IOPC also revealed that Wellings' mother, Lisa Green, and girlfriend, Emma Scott, are under investigation for allegedly coaching him on his evidence during his six-week trial at Preston Crown Court.Ms. Dawes had reported Wellings for breaching his bail conditions by contacting her after his arrest for attacking her two weeks before her death. However, a police officer dismissed her complaint, and she was urged to delete a Facebook post detailing her abuse. In that post, she did not name Wellings as the perpetrator. The IOPC concluded its investigation last year, and three officers will now face misconduct proceedings. Meanwhile, the lead prosecutor in the trial, Paul Greaney KC, reported that Wellings had discussed the case with his mother and sister while on remand, raising concerns about a potential conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. Judge Robert Altham subsequently banned Green and Scott from entering the courtroom until the jury reached its verdicts
