Builth Wells Town Council has requested more regular police patrols around their public toilets after several failed arson attempts. The latest incident involved someone setting a pair of underwear on fire and stuffing them down the toilet. Town clerk Louise Hammond expressed concern that these incidents are becoming increasingly frequent and costly, and warned that a successful arson attempt could lead to serious consequences. Mayor Councillor Gwyn Davies acknowledged the problem, which appears to be linked to groups of individuals after school hours. Hammond stated that Builth Wells is not alone in facing issues with public toilet vandalism, with other town councils experiencing similar problems and some even handing back their toilets to Powys County Council.

Regular police patrols have been requested around a Builth Wells public toilet after several failed arson attempts.

Thankfully, the incident came to nothing but town clerk Louise Hammond said it was the latest in three attempted arson matters at the site. Mrs Hammond told a meeting; “It’s becoming a regular occurrence, a bit of a problem and its costing us money. What is really worrying is that at some point they are going to be successful in causing a fire at the toilets.”

Mrs Hammond said Builth Wells is not the only town council experiencing problems with their public toilets. She said some councils have given up and handed the keys back to Powys County Council, which will close them and she said Llandrindod Wells, Rhayader and Knighton Town Councils have also experienced issues.
