It’s right that police keep a close eye on gangsters and their associates who plague Scotland with organised crime and violence. A database to keep their identities in one place and allow multiple agencies to easily search for them is no bad thing.

The system appears to have grown arms and legs with half a million citizens now being listed, many of whom will have no criminal conviction or ever have committed an offence. Even Mexico - where organised crime is the country’s fifth largest employer - doesn’t have one in ten citizens involved in the infamous industry. The figure floats between six and eight per cent and a staggering 370 people are recruited to join cartels every week.
