A Spaniel chased and mauled a deer to death in Richmond Park, South-West London. The attack was captured on camera, leading to the release of footage by the Royal Parks Police, who are now searching for the dog's owner and reminding dog owners to keep their pets under control.
Footage of what appears to be a Spaniel chasing a deer in Richmond Park in south-west London has been released by the Royal Parks Police after the attack on Monday at around 12.30pm near to Sheen Cross.
A statement by Royal Parks Police said: 'We would like to speak to the dog owner in relation to a fatal attack on a deer in #RichmondPark yesterday. Shocking footage shows the moment a large group of deer begin running away from the dog in the field.The two animals can also be seen running dangerously across the road in front of several cars.The footage begins by showing a large group of deer running away from a loose dogThe dog continues running after the deer, barking behind it before mauling it to deathIt has since been confirmed that the deer was put down due to the severity of its injuries.
'Richmond Park is a National Nature Reserve and home to around 630 red and fallow deer, which roam freely in this wild landscape. The Royal Parks are a sanctuary for wildlife, and it is illegal to allow dogs to chase deer. Dog walkers must ensure their pets are under close control at all times. If there is any doubt about a dog's temperament or recall ability, it must be kept on a lead or walked elsewhere.
