Nottingham's services are already subject to the biggest maternity review in NHS history.

Police say they will look into "severe harms and deaths" linked to Nottingham's maternity services as officers release an update on their investigation. It was announced at the start of September that Nottinghamshire Police would be launching a criminal investigation into maternity care at the Nottingham University Hospitals Trust .

At that stage, the force said it had found cases of "potentially significant concern" and said it would begin preparation work for its investigation. In an update on Thursday , Assistant Chief Constable Robert Griffin said: "A criminal investigation into concerns raised about severe harms and deaths linked to maternity care provision at the Nottingham University Hospitals Trust will take place.

"I have and will maintain strategic oversight of that investigation, which means deciding on its scope and scale and ensuring that we have adequate resources to deliver such an investigation... Our approach will be underpinned by compassion, care and candour toward those affected and I will also be taking advantage of good practice and lessons learnt from cases with similarities elsewhere in the country.“I would not expect the investigative work to begin before the Spring of 2024.

“Because of this, we will not be making any contact with families prior to that time, and for probably sometime thereafter. In respect of that contact, we will be working with Donna Ockenden to ensure that we do this in the most appropriate way. No identifiable information will be shared by the review team with Nottinghamshire Police without the consent of the affected family.”

The news comes as the senior midwife Donna Ockenden continues her wide-ranging review on NUH's maternity services, which is set to include at least 1,800 people. That makes it the biggest review of its kind in NHS history.
