French authorities have deployed 4,000 police officers and 1,600 stadium staff for a match between France and Israel following violence in Amsterdam last week
Anti-facist protestors lit flares in Paris on Wednesday night ahead of a football match between Franc and Israel
Activists lit flares and downed barriers installed to contain the protest before officers fired tear gas into the crowd.The protest was called in response to a French-Israeli group, Israel Is Forever, hosting a €260-a-head gala dinner to raise funds for the Israel Defence Force , with Smotrich advertised as a speaker.
Israel Is Forever did not respond to a request for comment. The group is led by French-Israeli lawyer, Nuli Kupfer Naouri, herself a controversial figure who has said “there are no innocent civilians in Gaza”. Activists also expressed concern about heavy-handed policing amid a unique security operation ahead of an Israel-France football match on Thursday.
Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Nkozi Zwelivelile Mandela, released a video message on Wednesday asking the French team to pull out of the match.Israel’s National Security Council has advised citizens to stay away from the match, warning they could become targets for attacks. But right wing Zionist organisation Betar said it has sent activists to the French capital.
