Police with metal detection wands have the power to stop and search anyone enjoying the night life of Fortitude Valley from next weekend.
Queensland Parliament was set to pass a two-year statewide extension of trial powers on Thursday after year-long use on the Gold Coast sparked by the stabbing death of teen Jack Beasley in 2019.
“You’d be pleased to hear that the police have already planned operations,” Police Minister Mark Ryan told reporters before the laws passed on Thursday. During the trial, detections of drugs also jumped, sparking warnings about the potential to bring more minor offenders into the justice system.
