The felling of the tree, which featured in the 1991 Kevin Costner film ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves', has sparked sadness and anger
Police say that whoever cut down the iconic Sycamore Gap tree will be dealt with 'swiftly and appropriately'. The felling of the famous tree, in Northumberland, has shocked many after it was found on its side this morning .
A world-renowned landmark on Hadrian's Wall, the suspected vandalism has caused widespread shock and anger, ChronicleLive reports. Tim Wickens, Trustee of the Northumberland and Newcastle Society, said: "I’m truly tearful having just seen the images and reporting on the world famous tree at Sycamore Gap on Hadrian’s Wall apparently being deliberately felled last night.
"I would urge anyone with useful information to contact the Police immediately to help them find those responsible for this awful crime." Police are now dedicated to finding and apprehending whoever is responsible for the tree's felling. "Anyone found to have been responsible for this damage – which we believe to be a deliberate act of vandalism – can expect to be dealt with swiftly and appropriately. I would ask anyone who saw anything suspicious or knows anything that can assist our investigation to get in touch with us."
