New details have emerged about Victoria Police’s pursuit of the man arrested over the “gruesome” Easey Street murders last week.
Police kept identity of Easey Street murders suspect Perry Kouroumblis secret for 'years' while waiting for him to leave Greece
However veteran Melbourne crime reporter John “Sly” Sylvester has revealed that Mr Kouroumblis has been suspected of carrying out the murders for years, with the 65-year-old having fled to Greece after being asked to provide a DNA test. “There's a law there that you have to charge somebody within 15 years of the offence, or in the case of a charge where you could get life, 20 years.The 65-year-old was arrested in in Italy over the"gruesome, horrific and frenzied" murders of two women in Melbourne, who were found stabbed to death almost 50 years ago. The then-teenager had even been pulled over by a junior police officer who found a knife in the boot of his car, which had traces of the same blood type as one of the victims. But when questioned, he had claimed to have found the weapon on nearby railway tracks – a claim police initially accepted. “The back story is that the police were doing one last sweep. So there were about 130 odd people, everybody , and they were going to DNA all living people and get family DNA from about 40 who had died,” the crime reporter said.
