Queensland police already have access to a network of 145 cameras in the CBD and CCTV from busways and trains. They are now asking for help in the suburbs.
Police want residents to register their suburban home surveillance camera systems with authorities to help them gather evidence of crimes.
Brisbane’s network of 145 inner-city CCTV cameras captures 60 incidents each day – more than 26,000 each year – and has been used as evidence in 800 police briefs in the past 12 months. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and Queensland Police Acting Superintendent David Jackman say the city’s CCTV network will be expanded as the region moves closer to Brisbane 2032.While the cameras sometimes help authorities respond to medical emergencies, more often than not the incidents caught on film are robberies, petty crime, vandalism and violent behaviour.Since the end of last year, the network has extended into the suburbs as homeowners agreed to.
“People can register their home CCTV cameras, businesses can register their home CCTV cameras with police,” Acting Superintendent David Jackman said on Tuesday.“We are aware that there may be other avenues for us to collect evidence to help police.” Jackman and Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner referenced the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games as another reason to want people to feel safe.
