One senior government minister shied away from backing calls for alcohol restrictions in Alice Springs amid the out-of-control crime wave, as the Chief Minister declares she would not support any “race-based” intervention.
Some policymakers and members of the community are pointing to alcohol as the driving force behind the violent and anti-social behaviour plaguing the town of nearly 26,000 people.

Picture: Australian and New Zealand Army Corps “The last thing people in Alice Springs need is a politician sitting in the comfort of a Sky studio in Canberra telling them ‘this is what you need to do’.” In the wake of the uptick in crime, Federal Labor MP for Lingiari Marion Scrymgour was critical of the Territory Government following the repeal of the laws last year.
