Sir Keir Starmer has defended taking 'tough decisions' needed to protect the economy, as MPs vote in favour of plans to cut the winter fuel payment for pensioners.

We've just had a statement from Jon Trickett, who was the sole sitting Labour MP to vote against the government's move to cut the winter fuel payment. The long-serving MP for Normanton and Hemsworth said the policy was 'a great Labour achievement' that he was 'proud to vote for' in 1997 as it had a 'transformative impact on pensioner poverty, which fell from 28% to 13% during our time in office.

'I fear that removing the payment from pensioners will mean that many more will fall into poverty this winter,' he said.'We know that the consequences of pensioner poverty are devastating. It can even be a matter of life and death.'Mr Trickett went on to say that he has been working behind the scenes to change the government's policy, but 'to no avail', and said wealth in the UK 'is not shared fairly'.
