An ex-defence minister has issued a stark warning about the rise of 'brutal dictators' amid continued concern over the state of the UK's defences. Meanwhile, another Tory has defected to Nigel Farage's Reform party, which a new poll says is now just four points behind the Conservatives.
Mark Francois, the former defence minister, described the plight of his D-Day veteran father while warning MPs that 'appeasement of dictators' does not work today.In a passionate address, the MP told the Commons his father had told him the story of a 'country that eventually, reluctantly had to go to war against the evil of Nazi tyranny'.
'He made me take a solemn vow that as his son I would never take living in a free country for granted, because he told me too many good men had died to achieve it.''Appeasement does not work'In turn, Mr Francois issued a 'stark warning' about the situation in Europe.'The skies are darkening. Brutal dictators with powerful weapons at their disposal are on the rise,' he said.'The democracies are on the back foot rather than the front.
