Labour frontbencher James Murray tells Sky News there will 'clearly be ways we diverge from the EU' after we revealed comments from Sir Keir Starmer on how he will approach Britain's relationship with Brussels.

, political reporterMPs leave Westminster, with each of the parties descending on a city or town alongside their party faithful and the media for days of speeches, fringe events, networking and, quite often, drama.

Asked about the strike action, Mr Spencer told Sky News:"I think it's time for them to come off the picket lines and get back to work."He called on junior doctors to return to work and"look after patients". "They seem obsessed with getting into power and not actually delivering for Great Britain and moving our economy forward."

He went on:"But that doesn't mean we can't have a functional trading relationship with them as an independent country. We asked Labour's shadow chief financial secretary to the Treasury James Murray about the party's announcement that it will introduce new fiscal rules to require future governments to get an independent impact assessment of any significant tax and spending commitments they wish to make .

Asked what would happen in the case of an urgent situation like COVID or the war in Ukraine, Mr Murray said non-permanent economic changes, such as a need to spend in an urgent situation, the new proposed rules would not be triggered. He said there will"clearly be ways in which we diverge from the EU", citing trade deals with other countries.

But he says:"What can they do? They can't end the strike. The government won't enter into talks. Everybody is very intransigent." Mr Lilley added that"most people would take the view" that the demand from junior doctors for pay restoration to 2010 levels - around 35% - is"really too strong and it can't be done in one lump".But he also said that successive governments have"exploited a pretty dozy trade union, the BMA, who have let doctors pay slip through their fingers, and now they're scrambling to try and catch up".

Their union, the British Medical Association , has insisted that strikes are safe as Christmas Day cover is being provided, but NHS Devon has declared OPEL 4 - the highest level of escalation - warning it might redirect non-critically ill people to emergency departments nearby due to low staffing. He said that a trust declaring OPEL 4 normally happens when there is a major car crash or other serious emergency, and that is normally manageable because patients can be sent to other hospitals.
