The timing of Boris Johnson's bombshell makes perfect sense
Instead there was fury, defiance and the threat of revenge laced through his remarks. He ended his statement saying he was"very sad to be leaving Parliament - at least for now". Having received a copy of their report a few days ago, he'd clearly decided to quit rather than suffer the humiliation of being sanctioned and potentially suspended as an MP through a Commons vote. There are detractors who say Mr Johnson is done, that the partygate scandal has damaged his standing with the public and the party beyond repair. Announcing the news on Twitter, Mr Adams said a new Conservative candidate had been selected yesterday. Sir Bill was critical of the Labour motion which sparked the investigation into Mr Johnson, and said he has been"severely provoked".
Allies of the former Prime Minister have been quick to regurgitate the well-worn and somewhat hackneyed observation that he's been 'written off in the past'. It seems that as the potency of Brexit as a political issue has waned, so have Mr Johnson's powers over his parliamentary colleagues. He said he will not stand in the next general election, which will be held no later than January 2025.
Asked about Mr Johnson's exit as an MP, she said comments made in his resignation statement were"straight out of the Donald Trump playbook" and he was"never fit to be prime minister in the first place". The Red Cross Movement will receive £10m, while the UN Office for the Coordination of Human Affairs will be handed £5m and the International Organisation for Migration £1m.
