In the wake of the parent company of car company Vauxhall announcing it will close its 120-year-old Luton plant, ministers are having another look at the electric vehicle sales targets car makers have to meet. Listen to Politics At Jack and Sam's as you scroll.
We've just been speaking with the shadow chancellor, Mel Stride, and we started by discussing the fresh consultation the new government is launching into the rules on electric vehicle sales following the announcement from the parent company of car company Vauxhall announcing it will close its 120-year-old Luton plant. The rule for 2024 requires manufacturers to ensure that at least 22% of new cars sold are zero emission, rising to 80% by 2030 and 100% by 2035.
Those rules were brought in by the Tories, but Mr Stride told us 'the government is right to look at this' once again because 'when it comes to things net zero, you need a balance'.'You need a balance between incentivising producers to do things that are right for the climate, incentivising consumers to likewise do the right things.'But you can't do it at the expense ultimately, of jobs, which is a situation that I think we're seeing here.
