Sir Keir Starmer might have been in Paris, but he has stoked plenty of controversy back home after confirming reports he's considering a ban on smoking in outdoor places like pub gardens and small parks. The PM was speaking in the French capital after meeting Emmanuel Macron.
While a YouGov poll suggests 58% of the public support the PM's proposed ban on smoking, there has been some strong criticism.'Surprise, surprise,' says our chief political correspondent Jon Craig, that those who seem to 'hate it the most' are the Tory MPs running in the party's leadership contest.'They no doubt reckon the Tory activists who will eventually vote for the new leader don't like it at all,' says Jon.
Jon recalls there were 57 Tory MPs who voted against it, many more didn't vote, and it was Labour votes that got it passed. And it will be the Labour government that ends up passing it into law, because the early election left Mr Sunak with no time to do it himself.
