A referendum on the Voice to Parliament would reach the high benchmark for success if held today, a new poll has shown as the Liberal Party is set to reveal its final position on the body.

The extremely high benchmark for a referendum to succeed – a majority of support in a majority of states – looks set to be met according to the latest Newspoll published by The Australian.

South Australia is the first jurisdiction to legislate its own Voice model which was borne out in the survey with 60 per cent of respondents supporting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s proposal. But the Liberal Party is yet to join Labor, the Greens, most of the crossbench and all of the state and territory governments in backing the proposal.

Shadow attorney general Julian Leeser on Monday revealed the opposition’s qualms with Labor’s constitutional amendment. Instead the opposition will propose the establishment of local and regional Voices in line with recommendations in the 2021 Calma-Langton Indigenous Voice Co-design report.
