Rossendale Borough Council is upping its leisure facilities
Ideas to develop three gym, swimming pool and sports ‘hubs’ in Rossendale have been supported by councillors of all political parties, along with increasing health activities at grass-roots community venues and work to boost people’s use of parks and other outdoor activity.
Furthermore, the sector needs to consider rising costs, from energy used to heat pools to leisure centre staff’s pay. The new Rossendale Borough Council report, called Our Place, Our Facilities, Our Plan: A Community Vision for Leisure & Well-being Facilities, was discussed this week. Its ideas include key hubs in the west, centre and east of Rossendale.
Central Rossendale The Marl Pits complex at Rawtenstall will be developed into Rossendale’s Sports Village, the new leisure report suggests. Public health, leisure centre costs and funding The report states the vision is designed to align with Sport England’s ‘Uniting the Movement’ ambition. This is a national 10-year aim to increase all types of physical activity across the UK. Better public health is the key aim.
Councillor views Councillors across various parties welcomed the report and ideas. But some also criticised a Conservative councillor for allegedly ‘scaremongering’ about the future of the current pool in Whitworth. Conservative Coun Laura-Beth Thompson said: “We also welcome this report and support the recommendations. A previous petition was signed by over 800 people in Helmshore following activity by Coun Ann Hodgkiss.”
He then said: “Will Coun Scott Smith apologise for scaremongering about Whitworth on social media? He is a borough and county councillor for Bacup and should be championing the whole of Rossendale.”
