Pope Francis has landed in Jakarta, Indonesia, kicking off a 12-day tour of Asia, against a backdrop of serious concerns about the 87-year-old’s health and security while abroad. Boarding a 13-hour-flight from Rome, the wheelchair-bound pope required a portable lift to get onto his aircraft. With Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Singapore also featuring in his busy itinerary, it will be the longest overseas trip Pope Francis has taken in his 11 years in the Catholic Church’s top job.
Even more visible than the throngs of press, politicians and church officials in Jakarta anticipating his arrival are the thousands of police and military providing security for the pope’s visit. Soldiers with machine guns and armoured vehicles were on Tuesday parked at the airport underneath posters and billboards showing a beaming Pope Francis and Joko Widodo. Security concerns globally have been heightened as a result of the ongoing conflict and tension in the Middle East.
