Popular Lancashire nature reserve forced to close as bird flu cases soar across the country
A breathtakingly beautiful nature reserve in West Lancashire has closed the doors temporarily as cases of bird flu are rising across the UK.
They apologised for the disruption and said they’d be in touch with anyone who had booked to visit over the weekend to arrange a refund or a transfer of tickets, promising a further update on Monday, October 10.In a statement the centre said: "Cases of avian influenza remain widespread across the UK.
Previous outbreaks in past years dropped during the warmer weather - but this hasn’t happened this year, experts are warning. Instead, the spread of bird flu has continued to rise throughout the summer of 2022, sparking fears of highly pathogenic variants of the disease. Lancashire is currently home to one 10 km bird flu disease surveillance zone, according to the latest information from the Animal & Plant Health Agency on the government website. This extends from north of Pilling Sands down to parts of Little Plumpton and from the A6 by Catterall across to the coast.
Dr Christine Middlemiss, the UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer, said: "We are seeing a growing number of bird flu cases on commercial farms and in backyard birds across the country driven by high levels of disease within wild birds. Unfortunately we expect the number of cases to continue to rise over the coming months as migratory birds return to the UK, bringing with them further risk of disease that can spread into our kept flocks.
