Dianne Bourne is starting to think the commercialisation of Christmas has gone too far
As I walked around the Trafford Centre a week ago, admiring the Christmas lights, I felt, for a brief moment, all warm and fuzzy and festive.
And Mariah was not alone. The wall was festooned with all manner of £40 bauble creations of celebrities, think Amy Winehouse, a bare-chested Harry Styles, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Freddie Mercury, oh they were all there in bauble form. Because do you want to know what the real scourge of Christmas is nowadays? Advent calendars. Bloody massive, unnecessary, plastic tat-filled boxes that somehow everyone, eg. grown adults, think they now need to count down the days to December 25.
A new low came last night when I was watching TV and an advert popped up telling me all about this year's LoveHoney advent calendar, for "only £149". I mean, nothing quite sums up the Christmas story like 24 sex toys does it?Oh, until I walked into my local farm shop and saw an advent calendar full of pork crackling. A 24 day countdown to Christmas via the medium of crusted pig fat. I kid you not.
Even, even if you don’t want to agree that these grotesque treat-piled boxes are hijacking a religious festival, then please at least can we concur that this is a quite absurd act of destruction against the planet, whatever your denomination. Back in my day, I was happy as a child with a nice, simple cardboard Advent Calendar, and simply excited to open the door each day and see what little picture would be inside - a donkey, a star, three wise men. Yes, something about the Christmas story, and easy to recycle too.
