Partnership to develop PortWind project off Devon and Dorset coast, aiming to power over three million homes.
A collaboration has been announced between Portland Port and Norwegian renewable energy firm Source Galileo to develop the PortWind offshore wind farm project off the Devon and Dorset coast. The proposed project envisions the installation of 132 wind turbines approximately 22 kilometers (14 miles) from the shore. These turbines would be interconnected to the national grid via a substation situated in Chickerell, near Weymouth in Dorset.
Under the proposed plans, Portland Port would serve as the operational and construction headquarters for the wind farm, along with providing accommodation for support staff. Source Galileo emphasizes the strategic location of the turbines, 22 kilometers offshore, to minimize visual impact while maximizing access to stronger wind speeds. A non-exclusive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Source Galileo and Portland Port to formalize their partnership. It's important to note that the PortWind project is in its nascent stages of development. Proposed areas for the turbines remain subject to future leasing arrangements by the Crown Estate. The potential benefits of this project, according to Portland Port officials, extend beyond environmental gains aligned with Dorset's climate targets. They anticipate the creation of local jobs, the possibility of international investment, and a ripple effect on Dorset's economy. The project's proponents highlight the potential for significant economic growth and positive community impact
