Crews are usually on standby from May but firefighters have been battling at least eight fires in the north of the country.
The most aggressive has been raging in the municipality of Oliveira de Azemeis since the early hours of Tuesday, with 450 firefighters on the ground.
The head of the local Civil Protection department, Joaquim Ferreira, is quoted by Portuguese news agency Lusa as saying:"We have a very serious problem to solve because the fire has got a new front as a result of strong winds. In the district of Esposende, two schools were forced to evacuate because of high levels of smoke and two main roads in the area were also shut. A fire there, which began on Tuesday morning has since been put out.
In June 2017, at least 64 people were killed and more than 250 were injured in wildfires, which devastated the central town of Pedrogao Grande. It was the worst disaster in modern Portuguese history and three days of national mourning was declared.
