The former sub-postmaster who led the campaign for justice in the Horizon scandal has been snubbed in a surprise honours list. Alan Bates, who led a crusade against Post Office bosses for more than 20 years, has been overlooked for a gong by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
In January, the PM’s press secretary said it was “hard to think of someone more deserving” of an honour. The Mirror revealed he rejected an OBE as ex-Post Office boss Paula Vennells still had her CBE. But she has since caved in to intense public pressure to hand it back. Mr Bates became a national treasure after millions watched his long and painful fight for justice portrayed in the ITV drama, Mr Bates vs the Post Office.
