A postman from Devon has been charged with the murder of his one-month-old son and has been released on bail. Tony Bartlett, a 38-year-old from Axminster, Devon , is accused of killing his son Atticus Bartlett in Chard, Somerset , on July 23rd, 2022. Avon and Somerset Police said Bartlett appeared at Yeovil Magistrates' Court on Tuesday. His case was then heard at Bristol Crown Court on Wednesday for a bail application, though Bartlett himself did not attend.

The Recorder of Bristol, Judge Peter Blair KC, granted Bartlett conditional bail. Officers were initially called by paramedics to an address in Chard at approximately 11:30 pm on July 16th, 2022. The baby was transported to the hospital in a critical condition and sadly passed away on July 23rd, police have confirmed. Catherine Flint represented the prosecution, while Ian Morrell acted as Bartlett's legal counsel. In a statement released on Wednesday, Detective Superintendent Lorett Spierenburg characterized the case as 'deeply sad', adding, 'This remains a deeply upsetting time for Atticus's family.' She continued, 'Our thoughts are with them and we will continue to provide them with specialist support as legal proceedings progress.' Spierenburg also requested on behalf of the family that their privacy be respected. The detective superintendent acknowledged that the murder charge would likely cause 'a great deal of shock and upset' in Chard and reassured the community that a neighbourhood team was available to assist anyone with concerns. She emphasized, 'The full details of what happened will be presented in court during subsequent hearings and therefore we'd please request people are patient and do not speculate on the circumstances at this time.' Spierenburg further stated that such speculation could cause further distress to the family and potentially prejudice future legal proceedings, hindering the defendant's right to a fair trial. The judge stated that a plea and trial preparation hearing will take place at Bristol Crown Court on April 16th
