Sterling has climbed by a cent against both the dollar and the euro as currency markets weigh the chances of a breakthrough.

The pound has climbed sharply during volatile trading as Theresa May travelled to Strasbourg for talks on the eve of a Commons vote on her Brexit deal.

Sterling added a cent and a half against the dollar on Monday afternoon to nearly $1.32 and was also up by a cent versus the euro to more than €1.17, close to a recent 21-month high. The gains were spurred by hopes of a breakthrough on the talks, as Mrs May flew to meet European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, though they later partly faded.

Meanwhile Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar, who had been due to travel to the US for St Patrick's Day, returned from Dublin airport for an emergency cabinet meeting. Jeremy Cook, head of FX strategy at WorldFirst, said:"We are starting to see some signs of movement from London and Brussels and that is helping sentiment."
