FOR THE LEDGER Billy Powell, Director of Community Services and Parks and Recreation for Enterprise, must feel like a juggler at times. Each day he juggles nine different departments as well as overseeing the construction of the new recreation and aquatic center. He recently gave a department update to the Enterprise Lions Club.
People are also reading… The city also has nine parks that have to be maintained and upgraded from time to time. The Johnny Henderson Park and the adjacent Donaldson Park on Highway 167 offer a variety of activities every day as well as special events such as the spring Festival in the Park and Spooky in the Park in October.
New fields and facilities are currently under construction at Peavy Park behind ESCC and are expected to be completed by May. The new parks will include six multi-sports fields, four sand volleyball courts, concession stands and restrooms, an 18-hole disc golf course, pickleball courts, and a 1.5-mile walking trail. There will be plenty of parking, and the two areas of the 25-acre complex will be connected by a pedestrian bridge.
The Civic Center, with Birgit Briggs as coordinator, hosts banquets, weddings, meetings, beauty pageants, religious and social functions, and while the City Hall is undergoing renovation, City Council meetings and City Court. The Senior Citizens Center is housed in the Civic Center and is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. for citizens over the age of 60.
Main Street Enterprise, under the leadership of Mariah Montgomery, “is the heart of the city.” It is locally funded, driven, organized, and run, and has invested approximately $6 million of private and public funds in the downtown area. Main Street also organizes fund raising events that are fun for the family and business owners alike, such as the Christmas Whoville Celebration, the Fall Festival, the Spring Fling, and other events throughout the year.
