I’m the author of the children’s book series The Happy Habits Club, which helps kids find their happy. Additionally, I’m a working model, international speaker, author and founder of Ready2Roar. For the past 6 years, I’ve studied how individuals pivot in their careers.
We’ve all been in this situation: a colleague or boss pitches an idea, looking for feedback. The yes-person on the team enthusiastically agrees with all the points and why it should be done. This happens conversation after conversation. Or maybe you’re this team member.
In an environment where assertiveness and distinctiveness are vital in climbing the corporate ladder, the archetype of the “yes-man”—an individual who agrees with everything without giving much thought to their own opinions or the ramifications of their acquiescence—is becoming increasingly obsolete.
The shift from being a yes-person to a thoughtful, assertive professional does not happen overnight. It requires a conscious effort to develop self-awareness, confidence and the soft skills necessary to express disagreement respectfully and constructively. In the modern workplace, the power of “no” is an invaluable asset. By learning to use it wisely, professionals can advance their careers and contribute more effectively to their organizations’ success.
