Hours before the inquiry was released, Premier Chris Minns vowed to push ahead with the construction of gigantic overhead power cables across the state.
A NSW parliamentary inquiry has backed the government’s determination to push ahead with building overhead powerlines across the state to link new renewables projects to the grid, and called for an independent ombudsman to be established to oversee the rollout.
“We acknowledge that this is not what many in the local community are calling for, and we emphasise that this was not an easy conclusion to come to. However, the evidence before us was clear that undergrounding would result in substantial additional cost and lengthy delays and would be unlikely to receive regulatory approval,” the report notes.
“What was crystal clear throughout the inquiry was that Transgrid has no social licence to build HumeLink … yet this was ignored by government members.”About 10,000 kilometres of new lines must be built before 2030, but their development has been hampered by funding constraints and community opposition.
Hours before the inquiry was released, Premier Chris Minns vowed to push ahead with the construction of the gigantic overhead power cables and said other options would triple the cost and risk the state’s power supply.
