A pregnant woman with a heart condition, considered at an unusually high risk of dying, feels reassured about having a baby after a pre-conception consultation. Despite previous complications, the couple believes that steps have been taken to increase monitoring and ensure the well-being of the mother.
A pregnant woman 'felt reassured' she could have a baby despite a heart condition placing her at an 'unusually high risk ' of dying. Sarah Read was diagnosed with a heart defect just a few weeks after she was born in Burnley in 1991. She underwent surgery and in 2016 she had a mechanical valve inserted. In 2018, Sarah met her partner Andy MacDonald, and the couple eventually began to talk about having a baby.
Due to her heart condition the couple went for a pre-conception consultation, at Manchester Royal Infirmary in December 2021, to discuss any risks in pregnancy. It came after a previous pregnancy, in 2019, had caused a blood clot to form in her arm.
