Dominic Calvert-Lewin was denied a penalty after clashing with Dan Burn in the Newcastle area
The Premier League have released the reasons why Dominic Calvert-Lewin was not awarded a penalty in the second half of Everton's clash with Newcastle at Goodison Park. The Blues forwarded tested Nick Pope with a low effort but clashed with Dan Burn as he tried to turn home the rebound. But after a tangle of legs, Calvert-Lewin was left in a heap and appealing for an Everton penalty, only to see referee Craig Pawson wave away his appeals before VAR checked and confirmed the on-field decision.
A tweet read: 'The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge between Calvert-Lewin and Burn is checked and confirmed by VAR - deeming that Calvert-Lewin kicked the back of Burn’s leg.' Speaking on commentary, Jamie Carragher initially expressed his shock that Pawson didn't immediately give the penalty before backtracking and admitting the officials got the decision right.
