The Premier League have confirmed why Mikel Merino's goal against Liverpool was given despite a lengthy VAR review. The Reds started poorly in what is arguably their biggest game of the season so far at the Emirates, conceding inside nine minutes after Bukayo Saka got the better of Andy Robertson on the right flank.
The Gunners' summer signing nodded home after a fine free-kick delivery from Declan Rice. The goal was awarded on the field but was quickly followed by a lengthy check by the Video Assistant Referee, who eventually confirmed the goal should stand. Explaining the decision in a post on X, the Premier League Match Centre said: 'The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by the VAR as there were no attackers in an offside position.
