St Mirren - who are locked in a relegation play-off with Partick Thistle in order to retain their Premiership status - are the reigning champions after defeating Celtic 3-1 in a major upset at Hampden back in December. 40 clubs will battle it out across five matchdays in eight groups of four. The group stage will be made up of seven Premiership teams and all 10 sides from the Championship, League 1 and League Two.
The remaining three spots will be taken by Lowland League winners Linlithgow Rose, Highland League champions Brora Rangers, and Highland League runners-up Brechin City. They will then be joined by the five Premiership teams who have qualified for Europe in the 2026/27 season, Celtic, Hearts, Rangers, Motherwell and Hibs - although the latter side's place will be taken by Dunfermline where they to emerge victorious in this weekend's Scottish Cup final.
The draw for the group stages will take place on Wednesday, May 27 at 1pm and will be broadcast live by Premier Sports and the SPFL via their online channels. The group stages will commence on the weekend of July 11/12 and continue until the weekend of July 25/26. The quarter finals take place on the weekend of September 12/13 before the four remaining teams contest the semi-finals on October 31/November 1.
