The grotesque system of energy companies and their representatives being authorised en masse to break into properties to effectively impose higher costs on those most likely to struggle with rocketing winter fuel costs was brought to a halt pending a review of the rules by watchdogs.
On Wednesday, Ofgem revealed its response to the practices exposed by our investigations correspondent Dean Kirby. When prepayment meter installation returns in November, providers will be banned from imposing these devices on “high-risk” customers, including anyone aged over 75 and homes with children under the age of two.
It is a welcome step towards protecting the most vulnerable in our society from stony-faced corporate indifference. But there is compelling evidence that it does not go far enough.
