THE inaugural match hasn't even kicked off, but Qatar already has its hands full defending its hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.Controversy has hounded the football spectacle since 2010, when FIFA, the sport's governing body, decided to hold the 2022 tournament in the tiny but oil-rich Middle East country.
Suspicions of a cover-up were raised and the International Labor Organization called out Qatar for not fully investigating worker deaths.Amnesty International bewailed the fact that there was no external pressure on Qatar to provide workers with better labor conditions.Doha has been on a PR offensive to tamp down the issues threatening the success of its World Cup. After all, it reportedly spent almost $40 billion to host the event.
