President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. expressed his condolences to the people of Iran following the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other officials of the Middle East country on Monday.
Raisi together with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and other Iranian official were found dead after their helicopter crashed in mountainous region in Iran on Monday. “We offer our deepest condolences to the people and the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, especially to the families and loved ones of the late President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, and their companions in this tragic incident,” Marcos said.
“The Filipino people mourn with you and will keep you in our prayers during this difficult time,” he added. Raisi’s death comes after Iran launched drone-and-missile attack against Israel last month in response to the airstrike against the Iranian Consulate in the Syrian Capital of Damascus on April 1, 2024.
The ongoing conflict has led Iran to seize MSC Aries while is was crossing the Strait of Hormuz in April, due to its supposed links with Israel. Among the 25 crew members of the said ship are Filipinos. Under Raisi’s leadership, Iran’s diplomatic relations with Western countries became strained as it engaged in enriching uranium and provided drones to Russia, which was used in its war in Ukraine.
