THE head of a Manila-based think tank said on Friday that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. should reaffirm during his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) to aggressively promote a 'truly' independent foreign policy, and not choose sides in the growing rivalry between the United States and China.

Asian Century Philippines Strategic Studies President Herman Tiu Laurel said during a media forum at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, that the President must proclaim that his government will be 'equidistant' from the two superpowers.'From what we have seen so far, the Marcos administration has been leaning towards the side of the US, particularly when it allowed America to set up additional military sites in various parts of the country,' Laurel said.

He should shift Philippine relations with China into a higher gear and should also recognize its neighbor as one of the Philippines' strongest economic partners,' said Laurel.'This should be clearly pointed out by President Marcos in his SONA' on Monday, he said.
