Given the long lead times to Australia receiving nuclear submarines, the State Department and the Pentagon said work was quickly needed on legislation for technology transfer.
| The Biden administration is urging Congress to move quickly on passing legislation allowing the swift transfer of America’s nuclear reactors and equipment to Australia underA senior State Department official said on Wednesday the legislation that needed to be developed was similar to laws allowing the transfer of US nuclear submarine technology to Britain in 1958 during the Cold War.
“Congress works on its own timeline and that’s not something we can easily dictate. But we’re going to have very transparent conversations with Congress,” a senior defence official said. Mr Courtney said the State Department was being given a timeline of within the next three months to provide Congress “with their suggestions.” “And we want to give the administration first crack in terms of just seeing what they’ve identified.”
