Discover the story behind Preston's distinctive green and white bus shelter on Lytham Road and Black Bull Lane, and how it connects to the city's early bus routes.
The distinctive green and white bus shelter on the Lytham Road and Black Bull Lane roundabout in Preston is a unique landmark. It is the only one of its kind in the city and holds a fascinating piece of Preston's transportation history. Andrew Swarbrick, drawing on information from books by Mike Rhodes, uncovered the shelter's origins. He revealed that it was the original terminus of Preston's first bus route, launched in 1922.
This route operated during the era of trams, traveling via Plungington Road and returning along Brook Street. The route was soon rerouted to utilize Plungington Road in both directions. The bus would turn at the junction of Lytham Road and Black Bull Lane, with the shelter positioned where the bus would perform its U-turn. Passengers would wait for their departure time at the shelter. This rather grand shelter was provided by Preston Corporation Tramways for its new, perhaps prestigious, service. So, the next time you find yourself waiting for the number 23 bus or simply passing by this shelter, remember its historical significance as a testament to Preston's bus heritage
