A Preston cycling group has received funding to create new cycle route maps and a 'cycle buddy' scheme, encouraging more people to cycle in the city. The initiative aims to make cycling more accessible and enjoyable for residents.
A Preston cycling group has received £10,000 in funding from Preston City Council to encourage more people to cycle in the city. Preston Pedals will use the grant to create five new cycle route maps , tailored to different areas of Preston . These maps will highlight routes to local amenities such as supermarkets, the railway station, Preston docks, the city centre, hospitals, health centres, parks, libraries, and other essential locations.
The group will also launch a 'cycle buddy' scheme, training volunteers from across the city as ride leaders. These ride leaders will then buddy up with new cyclists, providing support and guidance on different routes. Before being made available to the public, the cycle routes will be risk assessed and ridden with local people to ensure accessibility and safety. The maps will be available in both printed and online formats. Alongside the new maps and buddy scheme, Preston Pedals will also organise free cycle health checks with 'Dr Bike' sessions, allowing residents to get their bikes checked and repaired. This initiative is part of the city council's 'Activation of Active Travel' programme, which aims to promote walking, cycling, and wheeling as healthier and more sustainable ways to travel. Funded by Lancashire County Council, the programme seeks to encourage residents to adopt active travel methods, particularly underrepresented groups, for everyday journeys. The programme also aligns with the council's Community Wealth Building strategy, fostering collaboration with local partners to utilize local resources for community and environmental benefit
