Shoppers should be prepared to pay more and compromise on quality when buying their turkey for Christmas dinner this year after the UK’s worstAround one third of all free-range turkeys that were supposed to be heading to farm shops and supermarkets in time for Christmas have been lost to the outbreak so far, according the British Poultry Council. This is due to infection or as a result of culls carried out after other members of their flocks contracted the disease.
The UK produces around 10 million turkeys for Christmas every year, of which about one million are free range. Consumers may have to go without free-range turkeys this Christmas because they are far more vulnerable to bird flu
