Italians marked out footprints and carried around rulers to ensure they kept the required 3ft apart today. Francis held an audience in his private Vatican library with his clerical translators sitting at a distance. St Peter's Square stood empty today with the pontiff's usual Wednesday appearance live-streamed instead.
