Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called out some Coalition members who seem to “not understand their history” when it comes to Medicare and their past opposition to it.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come as the government announces new bulk bill changes for Medicare starting November 1. “I notice that some in the Coalition seem to not understand their history because they’ve gone out and said how fantastic it is – the bipartisan support for that,” Mr Albanese said in a press conference on Wednesday.
He pointed out that the Fraser Coalition government “abolished” Medicare after the previous Whitlam Labor government introduced it. “It took the election of the Hawke government, where Bill Hayden of course was the foreign minister, to reinstitute Medicare and John Howard went to elections proposing to trash it and get rid of it.”
