Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has promised his Voice push will not distract his government from the cost of living, health and other issues.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has promised his push to enshrine an Indigenous Voice in the Constitution will not distract his government from the cost of living, health and other crises, as he, saying it would improve the lives of some of the country’s most disadvantaged people.
He said the Voice would have “no impact on most Australians” but for the most disadvantaged, it would “provide the opportunity for a better life”.Since election night, Mr Albanese has used the imprimatur of his office to lead the push for constitutional recognition which will be put to a referendum in spring.
“My government has a very broad agenda of economic, social and environmental reform, and that will be our focus. But at the same time, how about we get this done as well?”In the first fortnight back, the government will introduce legislation to establish the $15 billion National Reconstruction Fund and the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund, and pass laws to prevent a repeat of a prime minister secretly being sworn in to ministries.
“For those people saying we should have legislated, many of those people were, of course, in government for nine years and didn’t. I’m not critical of that, I’m just saying that, that’s just a fact,” he said. “If we don’t have a voice to the bureaucracy, then we’re going to have the status quo, which is public servants making decisions about us from Canberra ... and not really understanding communities themselves.”
